it depends, what's the status of the PaymentIntent? if it's requires_action, then I think it should work.

It changed to requires_source

I think that it why it's expecting payment method.

But why did it change from requires_action to requires_source if the 3DS challenge was aborted.

Is this the expected behaviour?

yes that's how it works. if the 3DS flow fails or is cancelled, then the PaymentIntent needs a payment method (or source in this case)
