I suspect you'd need to prefix the number with the country code

I have tried it too, in this case +1 has been added infront of the number and it looks like as displayed in the attached screenshot
but if anyone enters the number from scratch then only the number is being appeared.

Well yes you select the country code from the country flag dropdown
