Hi, that is because with free trials, there is no payment intent. Instead, you would get a pending setup intent: https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/object#subscription_object-pending_setup_intent. You can write a conditional statement to look at the pending setup intent to collect the payment method details.
