Our overall goal is to collect the tax information needed to send out 1099 to our contractors.
My understanding is that TIN (taxpayer identification number) is a broad term that encompasses SSN (social security number) or ITIN (individual taxpayer identification number) for those that don’t have an SSN.
The key issue with the Express account is that some of our contractors need to enter ITIN instead of SSN. After messing with it for a while I was not able to get an ITIN field to display (pictured below). This is using the 1099 capabilities of the Accounts API.
Now I know that ITIN != SSN but this gave rise to the question:
Can one enter an ITIN in the SSN field, and this satisfy the Stripe TIN requirement to send out 1099s? Does ITIN == SSN for Stripe 1099 tax reporting purposes?
My team doesn't know much about onboarding requirements, please ask Stripe Support: https://support.stripe.com/?contact=true
I've emailed support back and forth and they have not replied for a week. I emailed asking for an update and they said apologies for the delay they will get with the team. I found this avenue and was very excited.
Are you sure you can't poke around and find something out about the relationship between TIN, ITIN, and SSN in the code base?
I wish I could help, but I honestly know nothing about this. If they're taking their time to respond it might be non-trivial to find an answer for this. Please be patient.
very fair point, thank you have a good day!
