Correct, the API call won't error and the coupon/discount won't be applied. That's just how it works today

If you really want to 'validate' the coupon before applying it you'd need to look up the Coupon via the API and check the applies_to field to see whether a prod_xxx ID in there exists in on your subscription items

Then you can infer whether it is valid for that subscription or not
