It does not look like there's a way to get this done in one step unfortunately. The second approach you mentioned where you create a refund first and then link it to a credit note should work. I'd recommend you test in test mode to be 100% certain

Thanks hanzo, I understand. I'll raise a feature request within Stripe, for now I'll try the second approach.
