@tribal coral you are using an API version from ancient times 2013-08-13. At the time, cancelled Subscriptions appeared as "deleted" in the API and didn't exist if you try to access them
This changed in https://docs.stripe.com/upgrades#2016-07-06 many years ago.
What you should try is force a more recent API version in your API request as documented on https://docs.stripe.com/api/versioning

Ah I see that's why there's a mismatch of the documentation! Trust me I've been trying to update but it's not my decision to make unfortunately

Sorry, if I were to update the version, /v1/invoices would normally get the expired sub?
Or is best practice to use query whenever possible?

if you were to update the version I think it should work yes and you can try it quickly with Postman to confirm
