Sorry, there is a mistake in my message. Not off_session: true, but setup_future_usage: 'off_session'.

When I use setup_future_usage: 'on_session' or when with off_session I don't activate checkbox Save payment details for future purchases, I don't get this error.

So you are setting
payment_method_save_usage: 'off_session', when creating the Customer Session ?

Oh, I didn't notice...
I used 'payment_method_save_usage' => 'on_session', when creating the customer session.
I'll try and let you know if this will help.
