I would like you to explain, as a developer, exactly what is confusing you? Like what do you expect, what settings do you have actively configured on your billing retries, exact example where it worked fine before, etc.

the subscription should have canceled because I do not have retries enabled

Gotcha so clearly you have automatic retries configured on your Stripe account which explains why the Subscription was canceled since the payment will be retried up to 8 times.
This section has existed for 10+ years so it's definitely not new. It's possible you or someone at your company changed the settings!

use the custom retry policy and then pick the option you want.
But I highly recommend not doing this. You're going to lose a large portion of your subscribers and a lot of revenue. There's a reason we offer smart retries like this
