hi there!
how are you accepting payments? Checkout Session, Payment Element, something else?
Via Checkout Sessions
we have a doc on Tax specifically about Checkout Session: https://docs.stripe.com/payments/checkout/taxes
if you use Stripe Tax, then Stripe will use the customer's address to compute thte tax, which if I understand correctly is not what you want. so maybe you can try using Tax Rates for this?
Okay, so to confirm, you would also recommend providing the tax rates (ids) manually?
Assuming the behaviour you defined is determined by product codes, I would expect us to handle it correctly via automatic tax.
I would recommend setting up your prices/products with corresponding tax codes and trying that to confirm, and if it does not do as you need/expect then you can reach out to support for investigation and correction.
You can, of course, use manual tax rates if you prefer
If your customer taxes are always dictated by your location, you may find that simpler to manage.
We can't offer tax compliance advice, though, only integration help when using the API/SDK
Our tax classification is "Tangible personal property rental" and I do not think you have this one. Please correct if I am mistaken
So you'll need ot make sure you're complying with relevant regulations
I don't know if we have anything specific for rentals, or if that matters (though I trust when you say it does). I see only:
txcd_99999999 General - Tangible Goods A physical good that can be moved or touched. Also known as tangible personal property. Physical goods
I would suggest you write in to support with details of the rental use case and any references you have, but yes perhaps you need to use manual tax rates if our available codes don't fit your needs.
Exactly. And that seems to trigger tax rates based on customer's (billing) address, whereas we should be able to provide the location where the rentals happen.
Okay, seems like we continue the original path with the manual tax rates. Just wanted to double-check that we had not missed anything as having this automated would have simplified many things. If you can send a feature request forward, then I would really much like to see support for place-of-taxation rules (perhaps through the Tangible personal property rental tax code). Thanks for your time!
NP!
Do you want to share your account ID for me to attach to this feedback? That would allow us to contact you when we can get that added.
Sure! acct_1N16zSEyomQaunYV
