@normal plume no that's impossible. Once the Invoice is finalized it can't be modified that way. What you can do I think is use a CreditNote to modify the amount: https://docs.stripe.com/invoicing/integration/programmatic-credit-notes

in order to show the stripe payment element there has to be an inoice to confirm right
how do people handle the scenario where they have an apply coupon button. at what point do they create the subscription?
They would create the Subscription after the end customer confirms. You can refer to this integration flow: https://docs.stripe.com/payments/accept-a-payment-deferred?platform=web&type=subscription
That's what that doc is walking you through end to end. It's a different approach to integrating that doesn't require an existing Invoice/PaymentIntent
