You need to use SetupIntent in order to collect and attach a PaymentMethod to a customer

And if you want to save the PaymentMethod during a Payment, you need to follow this guide:

The guide tells us that it is during a payment not after a successfull payment

It's the same, after the payment is completed, the generated PaymentMethod is saved and attached to the customer.

Have you tried to implement it and double check if it fit to your use case or not ?
