I see something about a generated card here: https://docs.stripe.com/terminal/features/saving-cards/overview#create-reusable-paymentmethod but it's not super clear what that is.

yep yep was just about to link to that. If you use the PaymentMethod ID from that generated card field when making your create subscription call, does the error go away?

is the generated card field on the setup intent object?

It is on the setup attempt object, which you can get by retrieving the SetupIntent and expanding its latest_attempt field https://docs.stripe.com/api/setup_attempts/object#setup_attempt_object-payment_method_details-card_present-generated_card
