I am using the Java API. Is it possible to add a description with line breaks using it?

Not as far as I am aware. This may have to be a feature request if sending us the line break characters in that field does not work

So in the dashboard, it works if I pass it exactly as it's interpreted internally on your site—could it perhaps work this way?

Unfortunately I am not finding this aspect of this parameter documented. I would say try it out yourself in test mode and if this is not supported our support team can file a feature request for you https://support.stripe.com/?contact=true
