Hello! Typically you, as the marketplace, would take less in fees and pass more to the connected account. For example, if you normally took $5 from a $20 transaction in fees, meaing the connected account got $15, you could discount to $18 and take only $3, meaning the connected account still gets $15.
What if the buyer was receiving their first product free?
Ex: The seller is selling a product for $20. The buyer pays $0. How would we ensure the seller is still receiving $20 - fees in this case?
You can create a Transfer to send $20 from your platform to the connected account: https://docs.stripe.com/api/transfers/create
Got it. And this is different from a top-up?
You'll need to make sure you have a sufficient available balance on your platform.
A Top Up is used to put funds into your Stripe balance from an external source.
So you could create a Top Up to move $20 from your bank account to your Stripe balance, then use a Transfer to move $20 from your Stripe balance to your connected account's balance.
I see. So would there be any advantage to using Stripe Discounts / Coupons here?
Possibly, it depends on how you're integrating, how you want things to show up, how your reporting works, etc.
But Stripe Discounts don't support this feature natively, right? Discounting for users but taking this discount from the platform instead of the connect account?
Correct, you need to build this functionality on your end.
Our Discounts will make things cheaper or free and decrease the payment from the customer, but we don't have functionality to "make up the difference" from anywhere else, like your platform.
Gotcha - thank you so much for your help! Really appreciate it ๐
