Hi, you can pass in the customer ID when you create the PaymentIntent: https://docs.stripe.com/api/payment_intents/create#create_payment_intent-customer

This looks like what I am looking for. When is it appropriate for me to create the customer object ? Would it be when the user registers/logs in ? (I allow users to register/login without paying)

Yeap, when they register, you can create a customer. Then, when they come back to pay, you can pass that customer ID when creating the PaymentIntent.
