We do not document any usage of the customer_balance payment method type with Setup Intents, so I do not think it is supported. Another option could be to use US bank debits, which allow you to set up the payment method for future usage

I see, and the alternatives for other countries/regions would be SEPA direct debit and Canadian pre-authorized debits (for Europe and Canada respectively), correct? Are there more similar options?

Nope, you're correct. Those are the methods you would use for bank debits in each respective region
