@shell token yes that can't work because default_payment_method is supposed to be the id of an already attached PaymentMethod on the Customer.
Your flow should be
- Create the Subscription with
payment_behavior: 'default_incomplete' - Confirm the underlying PaymentIntent client-side with PaymentElement.

I'm not actually integrating this in our application, I'm just trying to write a script to make it easier for other developers in my organization to set up a test subscription locally
Just tried setting the invoice_settings > default_payment_method parameter in the Customer API, and that seems to have worked!
