now when I go to retrieve the source with stripe.sources.retrieve(sourceId) I get no such source.
you created the Source on the connected account I assume with theStripe-Accountheader right? So you need the same option when you retrieve it

do I need to create a customer?
and attach thte source to the customer ? Or since I am using microdeposit its not necessary?
I'd recommend follow the docs carefully, they should be covering everything you need. I don't think you are supposed to use Customers at all for this flow no
