This article works for the buy flow. As I mentioned we have no issues with it.
What we want though, is let the users save new cards in the user profile settings. Without making an order. And the PaymentElement is not made for that, because it requires payment.

the link I shared with you allows you to collect the payment details and save them for future usage
it uses a SetupIntent instead of a PaymentIntent
so no payment is happening at this point
