I think the penny has finally dropped with global tax stuff.... if you could confirm my understanding is correct.
So during checkout on SaaS app, prices are entered ex. tax in Stripe. Billing info is collected in SaaS and passed to Stripe to enable proper tax calculations.
So when the user is presented the Price + Tax during the checkout, my question/confirmation is.... is this price that is returned from Stripe Tax based on Stripe Tax Registrations? i.e. if Registered for Tax in Tax Jurisdiction X, then Total Price = Price + Tax, else if not Total Price = Price ex. Tax.
Have I understood that correctly?
Then Stripe Tax Thresholds basically then tells me when I should formally register for tax in the specific tax jurisdiction, and once I have done that, then I let Stripe Tax know by using the Stripe Tax Registrations stuff.
Hi, can you share an explicit example here?
In general, tax surfacing depends on if the price you create is exclusive or inclusive of tax
As far as the thresholds, yes and we send a notification, https://docs.stripe.com/tax/monitoring#tax-threshold-notifications so you're aware.
So prices in tax against the products are entered ex. tax
I'm not sure I undersand that sentence. Can you clarify please?
The Products that I have created in Stripe, the Prices against those have been setup to be the Price Excluding Tax.
So to keep this as a simple example, let's say I have global traffic. I have 1x Product, which has 1x Price at £10 (Excluding Tax).
Then let's say that I am currently legally registered for tax in 1x Tax Jurisdiction, the UK with HMRC.
And I have updated Stripe Tax Registrations so that Stripe knows that I am registered here.
So the question is, let's say I'm using Stripe Pricing Tables Elements thing, when a Customer from the United States tries to purchase, what Price would they see/pay? Would it be £10, or £10 + US Tax £2 (random numbers as an example)?
If it's excluding tax, it would be £10 + US Tax £2 in this hypothetical example.
Interesting.
So even though in Stripe Tax, I am not Registered with US Tax Jurisdiction, the customer is still charged the local Tax?
I was expecting you to say that it would be £10 at first, then Stripe Tax Monitoring kicks in, I then go and formally register for tax in the specific jurisdiction, then infom Stripe via Stripe Tax Registrations, then the next US Customer who purchases would get charged £12 from that point forwards.
We document that piece here: https://docs.stripe.com/tax/monitoring#location-attribution
Also, we are here to help with integration issues and I reccomend that you talk to our support team to confirm this as well since Tax is not our expertise.
Our support team will be able to assist you better than I can: https://support.stripe.com/contact
I've not had any luck getting any sense from the support team on this tech stuff, only help seems to come from this discord chat
I've just had a read of that link you sent.
So then I guess my next question is....
What happens to that first £2, i.e. The Customer has been charged £2 in Tax, but I can't formally send this to the Tax Authority because I'm not formally registered with them?
This question might be outside of the scope of where you can practically help though, but thought I'd ask anyhow.
Yeah, our expertise is not able to assist here. You really want to push back on support as this is not an integration question.
The last thing I want to do is give you bad information
Yeah that's fine, I'll have a chat with some accountancy folk I know on this question.
The important question has been answered though, at least I know that the Customer will be charged £10 + £2, regardless if I have a record in Stripe Tax Registrations or not.
Yeah, that is a good call. We document this specifically: 'We help you understand where you might have to register, collect, and remit tax based on your sales into a state or country, even if you don’t have physical presence there.' which would be £10 + £2 and then, if the threshold is met, you get a notification.
I'm just having a quick skim read on this too
Looks like there are penalties for charging for Tax before formally registered.
Hmm. Something doesn't quite fit here with how Stripe is handling this.
This one sounds like it might be a proper Support Ticket to raise though
