Okay so I think that's expected to start if the account hasn't been claimed we do onboarding in a separate tab/window.
Try it and then it should go back to the embedded component

one more question...
this screen is new and has been confusing our customers. can we somehow set to default this to 'sms' 2 factor auth instead of google authenticator?

There's no way to control this on your end unfortunately. This is something we control and right now we push 2FA apps instead of SMS

just our opinion... but pushing 2FA apps makes sense for more technical people, but our customers are generally not very technical people.

Yeah I don't disagree with you, but we can't really know that about your customers. In a perfect world we'd have some kind of preference you could control but that's not something we have built at least 😦
