You'll want to make a call to update a Subscription and pass cancel_at_period_end: true

Just update the subscription cancel flag and it will be canceled at the end.?

Update the Subscription and pass a value for cancel_at_period_end, correct. Calling /cancel results in immediate cancellation of the Subscription, which you don't want.
