Wouldn't that add big complexity with invoices and so on?

Is there another workaround? Otherwise we'll do a cron but that's not super convenient

No built-in workaround unfortunately.
Alternatively you could create a montly Subscription with 100% discount, and charge the customer with one-time charge every 12th month.

But since the credit system is not directly related to payments, it's maybe worth building your own system.
