you can change the order of the PaymentMethod while mounting the Payment Element: https://docs.stripe.com/js/elements_object/create_payment_element#payment_element_create-options-paymentMethodOrder. And the first in the list will be pre-selected.

my use case is:

i mount the PaymentElement component
if the user is set, I update it with the customerSession token
it loads the saved payment methods, but selects the second tab

so there is no js method, to programmatically select a payment method? only tab order matters?
