I guess I could add some kind of app-level idempotency check for the view handling the return_url request but it sure would be nice to add a query parameter here.
It seems hard to verify that the request came from Stripe otherwise.

Just to make sure I understand: you are adding that state URL param but when we redirect users back to you, they are sent to just the URL before it?

They're sent to the right URL minus all query params
