The app doesn't receive anything, it hangs as if no card was presented, i.e. it's declined by the terminal with no status returned to the app

Ah so there's not actually a decline or a payment attempt. It's just erroring
You mentioned that you use this same reader in live mode fine. Has it been registered in both modes, and are you using the correct ID in your test payments?

We do have locations registered in both live and test modes, the relevant location ID's are passed when connecting to the reader. Should the reader itself be also registered somehow? Isn't it automatic? And then why would it work only in live and not test if the location ID's are correct?

ok I found the serial number of that reader, checking if I can see something in the logs...
I don't see anything particular so far, maybe there is an issue with the test card I'm not sure honestly.
