Um, I would like to know both if possible please?
I know we can use the webhook system for when a subscription payment fails so that is all good.
I just wanted to know if there was a way to identify this from the retrieve a subscription endpoint as well.

well you can check the status of the Subscription itself: https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/object#subscription_object-status
or look at the latest_invoice of the subscription and check its status: https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/object#subscription_object-latest_invoice
