No I can't think of any way to do that. You can send them an email about the Invoice happening in 7 days but there's no way to have them pay upfront or get a link upfront

Ah so your real goal is just to collect card details ahead of time and nothing else? You weren't asking that right?
And so yes the portal works, or just using Checkout and collecting their card details in mode: 'setup'

No, my goal is to send a payment link before the trial period ends.
Since that's not possible (apparently), I want to at least send the link to the customer portal.

gotcha, the problem is the CustomerPortal's URL you will generate only lasts a few minutes

so you likely want to send them back to your own website to view their Subscription and then maybe have a link to send them to the CustomerPortal at that point
