It's just how Link works currently. I can't provide too many details on why/how this all works internally
But there's not a way to change this
hmmm ok, maybe you can provide direction for our scenarios....
we only want to attach the Link payment method to the customer if they're purchasing a subscription with it, otherwise we'll just use it once and discard it
the confusion comes when they are have it attached for one subscription, then they purchase another subscription using Link but selecting a different card within Link (i.e. previous subscription used Visa, now we're paying with Mastercard)
If the PM is of type Link, I can see they already have one attached for that email, so I wouldn't want to attach the new one that the widget created. BUT, if I use the one already attached, will that be charging the visa? Does the payment method somehow get created with knowledge to use the Mastercard?
Maybe we shouldn't even worry about attaching or not, just attach to the customer and it doesn't matter, they can have infinite payment methods?
We have a limit of 400 payment methods per customer I believe
Why wouldnt' you want them to be able to use a different card though?
Don't understand that
I do want them to be able to use a different card. I just don't want to attach another Link account for email@email.com if they purchase another subscription using the same card.
So say they bought 2 subscriptions with a Visa card from within their Link account. We created and attached the payment method on the first subscription.
The next one comes in, we don't want to add a duplicate Link payment method to their account, but there's no way to tell if that one on their account is using the same underlying Visa card or a new Mastercard / something else?
So I could theoretically end up with X attached Link payment methods for X subscriptions purchased since the PM must be attached for subscriptions? And all of those Links could point to the same underlying Visa card with no way for me to know that?
I guess a root of the issue is not being able to tell the underlying card used in Link payment method types. So then I have to add them all since I can't see if a PM for that Link account with that underlying card already exists on the customer
Getting a colleague to help. One moment
You're awesome, thank you so much for the help
No problem
Hi there 👋 yup, you're exactly right. When Link is used to create a Payment Method with a type of Link, it also abstracts the underlying funding source. You're not able to determine the type of funding source used or details about it, so there is not a good way to deduplicate on the underlying funding source.
Let me triple check that we don't give any sort of fingerprint to use for that.
Very interesting.
So if using a payment method of type Link, we'd always have to attach it to the customer since we can't make any inferences about any Link PMs already attached and what underlying funding sources they contain.
Yes I didn't notice anything like a fingerprint - the only duplicate flag is the email, but as we said that still abstracts the underlying funding
Yup, that aligns with what I'm seeing, that there isn't a way to deduplicate based on the underlying funding source because that is abstracted away.
Very interesting! Well, that's a bummer but good to know for sure. Thank you both so very much for the help. I will use this information and proceed from here, have a wonderful day!
