Correct not supported today I'm afraid. Workaround you describe is best path forward
wait a sec, I just found that under discounts, there is "discounts.promotion_code" but it states that "To apply a coupon to a subscription, you must use the coupon parameter instead."

Yes, that's a field not a parameter you can pass. It will be populated on the Invoice object

But it seems to be only for when a coupon is applied directly to the invoice... not to the subscription
