What kind of payment method was used to create the payment?
Customer balance ๐
For further clarity, if it helps; initiated a customer balance transaction which generated wire instructions. Customer wired money. (in this case, this is all test mode so we simulated funding, but we are actively processing wire/bank transfers in production today)
Well then you should be able to refund the transaction and the funds will be returned to whatever payment method was used.
When I initiate a refund via API, the customer (me in this case) gets an email from Stripe asking for bank account details. I don't see that the funds were returned to the customer's cash balance
Hmmm... Okay this appears to behave differently than our other payment methods

I don't think there's an option to refund it unfortunately.
But you can just modify the balance for this Customer: https://stripe.com/docs/billing/customer/balance#modifying
