well for example the coupon you're using is one-time use. So if you do an update and that update generates an Invoice immediately, the coupon is applied to that Invoice, and that's it; it does not get added to the discounts field of the Subscription, because that field only represents future recurring discounts. If the coupon is used and applied to the new Invoice, it won't be set.

you can look at the latest_invoice for example after doing the update and see if that was discounted.
