Hi, let me help you with this.
Hi Vanya,
What's the exact discrepancy you're observing?
This is the product I created.
And I added a subscription with start date as 9th Jan and trial as 30 days,
So, the billing cycle for 9jan - 8feb is $0 as expected
then I added usage as below:
So according to this, for Feb 8 - Mar 8, the billing shouldn't be of $0, right?
But I'm seeing this for invoice history:
Trial period is coming in Invoices twice
Price per unit is $0 so the usage is doesn't impact the total amount.
According to my understanding, even though the per unit price is $0, based on the quantity the invoice should add the flat amount associated to that tier, isn't it?
Yes, but it seems like there was a trial period.
but the trial period was for 30 days only
Could you please share the Subscription ID?
sure, sub_1OWbboGui8cxlbVrIFkU5dGj
Ok, with metered-pricing Subscriptions, the customer is billed at the end of the month. Therefore, the initial Invoice (9 Jan) is $0, since there wasn't time for usage to accure, the 2nd Invoice (9 Jan - 9 Feb) is $0 because of trial period. The 3rd invoice (9 Feb - 9 Mar) will be the first regular one.
oh, so ideally the initial invoice (9 Jan) should not even be generated right?
As the customer will be confused seeing Trial period for Metered billing twice
Yes
Correct, that's the current limitation.
The number of invoices should match the number of billing cycles.
Billing Cycles: 2
9 Jan - 8 Feb
9 Feb - 8 March
Which means I need to get only two invoices. How can i get this behaviour?
Is there way to skip invoice generation when there wasn't time for usage to accure? During subscription creation
You can do it yourself in your app.
I mean, you can't do it via Stripe. How are you sending Invoices to the customers?
Also, it wouldn't be as confusing for them, since they can see the period in each Invoice.
We're not sending invoices specifically to the customer. We're redirecting the customers to the Stripe's customer portal where they can see their invoices.
I've been playing with this for the past two weeks and I myself got confused with that till you clarified the behaviour 😅
I guess then it's just a limitation we'll have to live with, unfortunately.
Cool, thanks for the help @narrow thunder , Will figure out something internally.
Happy to help.
