Hi, let me help you with this.
Is it always a refund for a payment the customer has made previously, although not related directly 1 to 1?
E.g. can there be a situation when a credit is larger than what the customer has paid?
Hi. Nope. I'll explain the different scenarios in more detail
Because if the "customers" actually earn money on your platform you can use Stripe Connect: https://stripe.com/docs/connect
But this means they will have to be a registered business and each have a Stripe account (your platform account will create them automatically)
We do Insurance underwriting software. So, our Clients will have a Stripe account, through which they collect money from their clients.
Scenario 1, would be, that the client captures there card details, on sign up, for an initial payment, we create a payment session and charge the card. Saving the card token for future reoccurring collections. Refunds (partial or full) could be done against any of the previous collections. Which as I said, I'm happy with.
An example of scenario 2, would be, that an adjustment is made to a client policy which lowers the premium, creating a credit on the Policy (i.e. the client has paid more than what is required after the adjustment). This credit is what they want to pay out to the client. But it is not linked to a previous charge or intent.
So, yes our software creates a Stripe Customer and Card on the Customer, when the first payment is done.
hi! I'm taking over this thread.
so you want to make a refund that is not linked to any PaymentIntent?
if so, we call this "unlinked refunds". you'll have to ask Stripe support to see if you are elibigble for this: https://support.stripe.com/contact
