Hi 👋

3DS would be triggered on confirmation, not capture, so you would still have the customer on-session at that point

If you are using Setup Intents and are creating payment methods configured for off-session payments then confirming the setup intent will trigger 3DS (if required)

So it's at the time of confirming the Setup Intent that the customer may need to complete a 3D Secure prompt ?

And they won't have to do it later during the payment intent? (off screen)

Yes the Setup Intent confirmation should take care of 3DS. However, an issuing bank can require 3DS at any time they want. So you should make sure your integration can handle that and bring the customer back on-session to authenticate the transaction.
