Hi, no you would need to onboard them as a Connected Account to receive payouts.
So if they're going to pay me a subscription fee, plus if they want to receive funds, they need to go through a customer sign up, then also separately, sign up for a Connect account?
Pretty much. A "customer sign up" would mostly just be collecting a payment method from them to charge for the Subscription
Ok, so basically what I should do is just collect a payment method and say, "this is what we'll use to charge you per month, plus you'll also receive money to this account"?
Well no, you would collect the PaymentMethod and you should indicate that that is what will be charged per-month. Then you send them through the onboarding flow to actually set up their Connected Account and during that flow they enter bank account details where payouts will be sent to.
Alternatively, you could look into using Account Debits: https://stripe.com/docs/connect/account-debits
You could use that to charge the Connected Accounts directly
But Account Debits can't be used with Subscriptions
So you would need to trigger the Account Debit each month
Hmm I guess I'm just looking for a simple experience to set up a recurring subscription, plus allow them to make money on our platform.
We're creating an ecommerce platform like Shopify for example. They pay us a monthly subscription. They sell products from their store. I was hoping I didn't have to do 2 separate signups.
Yeah these things are not one combined flow really.
Though that depends on how much of our hosted flows you want to use.
You could create "one flow" where you collect all the information yourself and you use Custom accounts
But really that is a lot of work and you don't want to do that.
You should just use our hosted onboarding here
Ya, currently we use Checkout for the monthly subscription.
To add another complexity, we have users who only make money on our platform, they go through the Connect Express onboarding. I guess we'll have to do both for our store owners.
Yeah there isn't really a better path unfortunately
That's ok, I'll have to check Shopify again to see how they do it, I don't remember doing it twice but I could be wrong. I'm sure there's a way to make it feel easy.
Thanks for your help.
Yeah Shopify created their own flow here -- they don't use our hosted stuff.
