Really you shouldn't clone when using Express Accounts

You should handle everything on your platform and use Destination Charges

I may eventually do custom accounts, just to prevent the redirect to the stripe pages. Would that influence whether I clone or not?

But for now, sticking with express accounts. Are there any functional drawbacks to using destination charges that might be important for me to know? Can I achieve all the same things; recurring charges, payment method updates, and the not needing customers to continuously enter their payment details?

Yeah for both Express and Custom you want to use Destination Charges, not Direct Charges (which would involve cloning). The drawbacks of using Direct Charges are things like addressing disputes is really difficult, you can't easily cover for negative balances, you lose a lot of your reporting ability, a lot of customization is limited since Express Accounts don't have a full dashboard like you end up having to rely on default Billing Settings, etc.

Direct Charges and the cloning route have more drawbacks then benefits then, if I've understood you correctly.
