Yes you can do that. https://stripe.com/docs/invoicing/dashboard/credit-notes I don't see any amount restriction in the public doc, and I'd suggest you to test it out in test mode before releasing in prod

Thanks @clear willow , I didn't see any dollar limits either. But I had an initial call with a Stripe representative, who read verbatim from the example scenarios on that documentation page. And the sample scenarios seem fairly far from what we're trying to do. But I guess we'll give it a try with a large dollar amount and see what happens. One follow-on question: we would be doing the testing in Stripe's sandbox. Do you think that any dollar limits Stripe would have would be similar between the sandbox and production? It would be unfortunate to have it work as expected in the sandbox for say $5,000 and then find out in Stripe's production environment, there is a much lower limit.

And one more clarification, you linked to 'credit notes', which are similar, but I think distinct from 'customer credit balances' (https://stripe.com/docs/invoicing/customer/balance)

It's the same thing, issuing a credit note is one use case for credit balance.

OK, thanks. And you would expect that any dollar limits would be similar between Stripe's sandbox and production? We don't want to test in sandbox with $5,000, have everything appear to work, and then find out that production has very different dollar limits.

$5000 is less than the max amount that Stripe supports.

I think I'm trying to ask a slightly different question. When I was on the phone with the Stripe rep, they implied that this technique (using credit notes for dollar amounts like $1,000) was sort of abusing the concept of a credit note / customer balance because that wasn't what it was designed for, and he thought there was probably a limit on the size of a credit note, as opposed to a Stripe limit on the max charge amount.

I don't see such limit in docs. Again please try it out in test mode, the behaviour in test mode and live mode is consistent.
