i'm not sure what you mean by alternative strategies? I've already mentioned the alternative strategy which is to build your own Dashboard for the customer to manage the subscriptions. Customer Portal can't do what you're looking for because you can't explicitly define the list of subscriptions to update/show/cancel for the Customer Portal
