To give free units you can add another Price that is $0 per unit and track usage on that Price for the free units.

That is probably the best way to do this

The Subscription can have multiple Prices

So yeah you could add a $0 Price if you want to track the number of free units you are providing

okay, and what about coupon ? can i use coupon with usage based subscription ?

Yes coupons should work if you want to go that route.
