Just to make sure I'm understanding right - you already have a subscription that's part way through a year long cycle. You're asking how to get behavior where the subscription is discounted for all future updates during the rest of the year, but is not discounted when it's renewed?
The challenge we experienced was that we rely on prorated subscription adjustments to increase the quantity over the course of the yearly subscription period.
One of these customers had a once off payment applied to their account when their first say 5 quantities of our subscription product were created.
When we adjusted this quantity to 6, instead of the customer being billed for 1 extra quantity, they were billed for the total amount of their once off discount plus the 1 extra quantity. We didnt realize that the pro ration would add the once off discount amount to the customers invoice.
So, in order to ensure this discount amount is not added to their invoices as they increase their quantity over the course of their yearly subscription, we intend to add another discount which spans their first subscription period (we specify a duration for this new discount as opposed to it being once off). So if we update the quantity and trigger a proration, the calculation will add the original discount amount to the invoice, but apply the second discount, so they net out, meaning that the customer will only be billed for the additional quantity. We tested this and it works OK.
Our concern is that upon renewal, the second discount amount would be added to their renewal invoice. Would this be the case?
Gotcha!
I am impressed that you get me! I guess the question is if we set a redemption limit on a coupon, will it be charged to the customer upon renewal
we didnt expect the once off coupon to be charged to the customer when we modified the subscription so we are worried our second coupon will cause the same issue later
As long as it's a one-off coupon that you're always applying on update, then it shouldn't be carried over when the subscription renews.
what if it is a coupon with a redemption limit that expires the day before the subscription renews? because we need it to be a redemption limit coupon in order for it to be used to net out the original on-off coupon multiple times over the subscription period
The redemption limit isn't what's relevant here (that's only for when the coupon is newly added to a subscription). What'll matter more is https://stripe.com/docs/api/coupons/create#create_coupon-duration_in_months
OK so if we use the duration in months to end before the renewal, it will not be factored into the renewal amount calculation?
Correct
👍
The duration in months is a bit broad - is there a way to specify the date or give it 9.5 months, would that work?
Unfortunately that's not something we support right now
