Yeah so 3ds is sometimes required by the bank. That's true of any payment type within stripe (including payment intents). Recommend reading https://stripe.com/docs/payments/3d-secure for more info/as a place to start. If you're using our recommended integration flows (either Checkout, payment links, payment element, invoices, etc) then we will handle displaying the 3ds auth modal automatically
