I am looking to create a membership that has a 1 year commitment (end of current period is one year from creation) but the cost of the membership is billed on a monthly basis.

Gotcha then you mostly want to create a Subscription Schedule (https://stripe.com/docs/billing/subscriptions/subscription-schedules) for 12 months and then have it cancel
