Can you describe the situation a bit more?

we want to be able to set the payment method type back to card, if someone chooses google pay and then closes the modal without approving the purchase

Gotcha, I don't think that's directly supported. I would try unmounting and remounting but otherwise you might need to destroy it and recreate it.
