Hello 👋
What is the ideal duration of the depsits/refunds exactly?
The only option I can think of is placing a hold on a payment method where the authorization expires in 7 days.

Our team won't know much about compliance though
if you're actually capturing funds and issuing refunds later on, I'm not super sure if it goes against our recommendations/terms
Our support team might be able to help clarify

Thanks. It could be months before the payment potentially needs to be refunded - is that possible?
Depends on Payment Method as far as I know. For example ACH has a 180 day window for refunds

Trying to find the window for cards and/or if there is an extended window for this. I think I have heard of users taking security deposits through Stripe though I am unsure if I have heard of how the funds are returned

We'd mainly be dealing with Debit Cards.
Did you find what the window was for cards? I can't seem to see any. I can contact support if needs be.
Apologies for the wait, I haven't been able to find much myself, will ask colleagues quickly and get back to you
So my colleague noted that there is no refund time limit for cards, though refunds are more likely to fail the longer it has been since the initial payment
So overall you should be able to do this, but check the refund window for any payment methods that you offer.
Also unfortunately when the refund happens, you won't be refunded the Stripe fee, so keep in mind that you will be out some percentage of the full payment when you refund
Also if you have not already, definitely talk to our support team to see if we support your business type https://support.stripe.com/?contact=true

Thank you for that. Just to check (because there are two topics here). Are you talking about taking payment and refunding - or the pre-authorization/payment hold example above?
I was talking about refunding. For holds the window largely is 7 days, though there can be an extended window for that. If you ask our support team about that, they may be able to help you with that as well
