I wonder if this has something to do with the invoice being the first invoice of the subscription cycle where you're setting the default payment method when you create the invoice.

are you seeing the same behavior with renewal invoices?

Look here is a reccuring payement and there is no default payment method

The default payment method in that case is set on the Subscrition object itself.
