I wonder if this has something to do with the invoice being the first invoice of the subscription cycle where you're setting the default payment method when you create the invoice.

Look here is a reccuring payement and there is no default payment method
this is a renewal in the last use case

I can see the Customer does not have a default payment method for invoices and it doesn't look like the subcription has one either
