Free trial would be the only way to not charge customer for the first month.

One thing I haven't tried and which might work is, adding the first invoice amount to customer credit balance manually

So let's say first invoice would be around $10, then you credit the amount to customer balance and then that amount gets automatically applied to the invoice when it finalizes
