These Dashboard settings only apply to renewals, not the first invoice of a given subscription. I'm assuming "first iteration" in this case refers to the first invoice of a schedule that starts in the future?

yep exactly - this is what I'm seeing (lmk if it would be helpful to show & blur sensitive info) anywhere else.

i.e. it's 7 days before the subscription begins, is there a way of sending some sort of "We'll charge your payment method in 7 days for $x for product y" like the renewal emails are?

I believe the only way to do this is to listen for invoice.upcoming events and send your own emails
