It just really depends on your use-case. Let's say you don't track free plans, what would you do with the subscription? Would you cancel it?
and what if customer wants to "upgrade" back to a paid plan? Would you re-create the sub?

Technically, if you cancel the sub on downgrade then it won't really be an upgrade because the underlying sub is already cancelled. In case you use Customer portal then it won't show anything for the free plan (if you don't have a price for it)

I see nothing wrong with having free plans on stripe too or even trials.
